South DT Plan1

Since the spring of 2008 the City has been developing a new vision for its South Downtown – the area south of Washington that will host Milwaukie’s future light rail station and lies between 99E and 21st Ave. Want to know how this plan came about? CLICK HERE:

Beyond the trees is where the plaza will go (you can see the Broken Arrow Archery Building in the background)

Plaza site

The pedestrian bridge to the Riverfront would be to the left. Where the large trees are is a proposed rooftop plaza above a parking garage with access to the river.

Invasive species cover the view and access to Kellogg Lake. Nature trails instead?

Future site of Milwaukie Light Rail station

The tracks will be to the left of the current train tracks

For the last 40 years Kellogg Lake has been completely inaccessible until the bank was removed for Light Rail. This is also where the pedestrian bridge would align with the Light Rail bridge connecting Island Station to Light Rail.

Mandy, would you find out who will pay for such a thing? Since the city only owns the old Cash Spot site and the “triangle”, do any of the current owners support this proposed plan? This plan seems a lot like the plan that we already had from 1998. Other than the light rail stop what are the differences? How much have we spent on this plan that looks so close to the old one?

There are a lot of really cool photos and drawing but what’s the plan to implement a $47 mil project like this? Milwaukie is great at paying for really cool drawings but not so great at getting developers to build them. How is this one going to be different?

One last thing, how will the other 90% of the city access this beautiful/expensive area? There is little to no safe bike or pedestrian access from most of Milwaukie to the down town area. Since parking is very limited in the DT and this plan would actually eliminate even more it seems we should work on infrastructure to help our own citizens access the area. Now that would be some sexy infrastructure.

Lots of cool stuff here but I for one would love to hear more about council’s and staff’s plan to make this a reality.
